We Not Only Introduced the Concept of an Integrated
Hospital Campus in Nanaimo—We’re Building That Vision
A Healthy Place to Work, Live, and Heal

Imagine a hospital where you can park your car once and get all the services you need within walking distance: bloodwork, prescriptions, specialist appointments, treatments, and even lunch. Envision pedestrian-first walkways enhanced with benches, outdoor meeting areas, good lighting, security patrols, and banners to celebrate the seasons together. Picture a hotel where you can stay during a loved one’s cancer treatments, with a restaurant nearby so you don’t have to worry about meals. Imagine everything you need for hip or knee surgery on one floor in a single building!

Our vision for the Hospital Campus is to bring safer and more efficient delivery of care to a community that is currently under-resourced

Historically, there were few doctor’s offices, medical buildings, or services near Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. When we first brought the concept of an integrated hospital campus to City Hall, we wanted to advocate for a hospital that could adequately serve the population North of the Malahat—an area that represents half the population of Vancouver Island. We envisioned a hospital surrounded by buildings where medical professionals could set up their practices all within close proximity, with services like a restaurant, pharmacy, medical lab, X-ray, and a hotel all connected by pedestrian-first walkways and parking.
Today, after two decades of work with the City to create the zoning needed for hospital campus lands, we are building that vision. With several medical buildings already complete and three new buildings coming in the next couple of years.

Site Services
We believe that by making it easier to access related specialists by bringing them into close proximity, we can change the outcomes for patients. That will include a new hotel that accommodates visiting doctors and out-of-town families during cancer and other treatments, pharmaceutical and x-ray services, a blood lab, and a restaurant that caters to people who are visiting or working at the hospital.
